| SUB-MAJOR GROUP 62: SUBSISTENCE AGRICULTURAL AND FISHERY WORKERS

Subsistence agricultural and fishery workers grow and
harvest field or tree and shrub crops, grow vegetables and fruit,
tend or hunt animals, gather wild fruits and plants, catch fish
and gather other forms of aquatic life in order to provide food,
shelter and a minimum of cash income for themselves and their
households.
Tasks performed by workers in this sub-major group usually
include preparing the soil-, sowing, planting, tending and
harvesting field crops; growing vegetables; growing and
gathering fruit and other tree and shrub crops, gathering wild
fruits, medicinal and other plants; tending, feeding or hunting
animals mainly to obtain meat, milk, hair, skin or other
products; gathering firewood; fetching water; breeding or
catching fish and cultivating or gathering other forms of
aquatic life; building shelters and making simple tools, clothes
and utensils for use by the household; storing and carrying out
some basic processing of their produce; selling some products at
local markets.
It should be noted that the necessary skills - an
understanding of the natural environment and the crops and
animals worked with, as well as manual strength and dexterity -
are usually acquired by working from childhood with other
members of the household to produce the necessities for
subsisting.
