MINOR GROUP 112: SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS

Senior government officials advise governments on policy matters, oversee the interpretation and implementation of government policies and legislation, represent their country abroad, or carry out similar tasks in intergovernmental organisations.

Tasks performed usually include: advising national, state, regional or local governments on policy questions; overseeing the interpretation and implementation of government policies and legislation; representing their country abroad; performing similar tasks in intergovernmental organisations. Supervision of other workers may be included.

Occupations in this minor group are classified into the following unit group:

    1120 Senior government officials

    Note

Senior government officials who manage a government-owned or government- controlled industrial, public utility, transport or other such business enterprise or organisation. or perform tasks similar to those of 122, Production and operations department managers, or, 123, Other department managers, are classified into Sub-major group 212, Corporate managers (See note at beginning of Major group 1) or 13, General managers (See note at beginning of Major group 1) as appropriate.

Further possible subdivisions of this minor group into unit groups should reflect the particular policy areas in which government administrators are working and about which they may need thorough knowledge and understanding in order to carry out their tasks. Different areas of government functions are defined and classified in the Classification of the functions of government (COFOG), issued by the United Nations Statistical Office in 1980 (Statistical papers, Series M, No. 70). One possible subdivision of policy areas would be the following:

    1. General public services (COFOG major group 01)
    2. Defence, public order and safety affairs (COFOG major groups 02 + 03)
    3. Educational, cultural and religious affairs (COFOG major groups 04 + 08)
    4. Health, social security and welfare affairs (COFOG major groups 05 + 06)
    5. Housing and community amenities affairs (COFOG major group 07)
    6. Energy and economic affairs and services (COFOG major groups 09 + 10 + 11 + 12 + 13)
