Global Media Competition: Online anthology on Migrant Domestic Workers

Since 2015, the International Labour Organization and its partners have organized an annual Global Media Competition on labour migration to recognize exemplary media coverage on labour migration and fair recruitment.

The Global Media Competition on Labour Migration contributes to the production of quality reporting and raising awareness about labour migration - a topic featuring strongly in 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This year, to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the ILO Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189), the ILO has compiled the Global Media Competition Anthology on Migrant Domestic Workers. The Anthology includes a compilation of the best media pieces submitted over the past seven years, on the specific theme of migrant domestic workers, to recognize the critical contribution of migrant domestic workers to the wellbeing of economies and societies and highlight the essential role journalists can play in recognizing such contribution and unveiling the decent work deficits they often face.

The media pieces featured in this anthology include entries submitted since the first edition of the competition in 2015. For this reason, some of the situations described in these reports have in the meantime been addressed and corrected. This anthology illustrates the relevance and the value of this kind of reports and how they can contribute to highlighting abusive situations, which can contribute to the identification and the implementation of appropriate measures to address them.

The entries that feature in this Anthology contribute to the elimination of public misperception, xenophobia and discrimination against migrant domestic workers and highlight the positive contributions they make to economies and societies in their countries of origin and destination. The authors have also demonstrated creativity and accuracy, and promoted the use of rights-based terminologies and language, in line with the ILO Media-friendly glossary on migration.

The ILO is organizing this annual Global Media Competition since 2015 in collaboration with its various partners, including the International Trade Union Confederation, the International Organisation of Employers, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Federation of Journalists, Human Rights Watch, Equal Times, Solidarity Centre, and Migrant Forum in Asia.

The competition is also organized with the support of the European Union funded project REFRAME (Global Action to Improve the Recruitment Framework of Labour Migration), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) funded project FAIR (Integrated Programme on Fair Recruitment - Phase II).
