    The Inter-Parliamentary Union, the International Labour Office and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in this Handbook offer responses to fundamental questions on migration, such as those concerned with its root causes and possible responses in terms of good policies and practices, as well as the challenges, both for migrants and for countries, in relation to national well-being, development and social cohesion. The handbook proposes a balanced approach to make effective laws and policies that address the human rights of migrants and the governance of migration.

These fact sheets and videos are aimed at employers and workers in micro and small enterprises including those in the informal economy. Following the information and advice contained in the fact sheets and videos will assist in ensuring that those working in these sectors remain safe and healthy.

    Social protection for maternity: Key policy trends and statistics

    This policy paper: (i) provides a global overview of the organization of maternity cash benefits and maternity care in 188 countries; (ii) analyses trends and recent policies, e.g. extension of maternity protection coverage in a large number of low- and middle-income countries; (iii) describes the negative impacts of fiscal consolidation and adjustment measures in a number of higher-income economies; (iv) presents the costs of a universal benefit to all pregnant women in 57 low and middle income countries; and (v) calls for the expansion of maternity protection to accelerate progress on women’s rights and enhancing the well-being of new mothers, promoting inclusive development and social justice.
