Activities of the Employment Intensive Investment Programme in Burundi

Historical Information

Since 1980, the ILO has been assisting the Government in carrying out communal road construction and improvement using labour-based methods using a multisectorial programme. With UNDP funding and multi-bilateral funds (from Belgium and KfW - Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau Germany), the ILO has also helped the Government to organize a training programme for local contractors and to execute about 200 km of feeder road rehabilitation and maintenance. However, most project activities have come to a halt because of the political instability in the country.

A programme on economic and social integration of young people in Burundi which has a component on employment-intensive works was formulated and presented to donors in 1999.
