This brief is part of the Transforming our world: A cooperative 2030 series produced by the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC). Through a series of 17 briefs, one for each Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), COPAC hopes to raise awareness about the significant contributions of cooperative enterprises towards achieving the 2030 Agenda in a sustainable, inclusive and responsible way, and encourage continued support for their efforts. This brief in the series focuses on SDG 8 – promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

ILO sponsors training on agricultural cooperative management through My.Coop distance learning programme
12 March 2018
Since 2012 the International Training Centre of the ILO has organized a distance learning Training of Trainers programme on My.Coop – Managing your agricultural cooperative training package. The latest edition took place in late 2017, with participation of four participants sponsored by the ILO’s Cooperatives Unit.

A Zimbabwean trade union takes a first step towards establishing a worker cooperative for its unemployed members

Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) has taken the first steps towards the establishment of a worker cooperative which will provide employment opportunities for its members who lost their jobs in 2015.

ILO, ITC-ILO and FAO held a workshop to test and validate a training programme for financial cooperatives apex organizations.

Cooperating out of child labour in Malawi

In Malawi child labour is a persistent challenge. The recent estimates show that more than 2.1 million children, or about 38 per cent of Malawian children, continue to be involved in child labour. Most of these children are employed in the agricultural sector, and many are in hazardous forms of child labour. As part of a wider approach, the ILO is looking into the ways in which cooperatives and producer organizations can tackle the issue of child labour in agriculture.
