Indian women co-operators are being trained to roll out Think.Coop
The Indian Academy of Self-Employed Women (IASEW) conducted a training of facilitators on the ILO’s Think.Coop training tool, with a view to further strengthening women cooperative entrepreneurs in the rural and informal economy in India.
The ILO supported the adaptation and translation of the ILO’s Think.Coop training tool into Hindi and Gujarati. Launched in January 2018, Think.Coop is aimed at helping participants understand how mutualism and cooperation can improve livelihoods opportunities and key characteristics of the cooperative business model. Think.Coop is the initial module of the Our.Coop training package that uses a peer-to-peer, activity-based learning methodology.
A training of facilitators workshop of Think.Coop was co-organized by the ILO, the Indian Academy of Self-Employed Women (IASEW) - the educational institution of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) - and the SEWA Cooperative Federation from 25 to 28 November 2019 in Ahmedabad, India. The 23 participants (22 women and 1 man) included trainers, cooperative leaders, and researchers among them.
The objectives of the training were to:
Familiarize participants with the learning approaches, tools, and the rationale of the sessions under Think.Coop module;
Build capacity of participants to facilitate discussions around the topics and concepts underlying the Think.Coop module; and
Enhance ability of participants to provide guidance to self-employed women in the rural and informal economy in using the training guide and in promoting a safe learning environment and a motivating group dynamic.
The first two days of the training focused on facilitation techniques. They familiarized the participants in the Think.Coop methodology and concepts. On the third and fourth days of the training, the participants conducted a demonstration of the Think.Coop training with 14 self-employed women. Moreover, introductory sessions and briefings on the other two tools of the Our.Coop family were conducted: Start.Coop – a step-by-step guide to set up a cooperative in a participatory manner – and Manage.Coop – a guide to improve the management of a cooperative enterprise (to be launched by mid-2020). Discussions are underway between the ILO and IASEW in translation and adaptation of Start.Coop in 2020.
