On 18 December 2019, the Cook Islands is marking the ILO’s centenary with the ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006). By depositing with the International Labour Office the instrument of ratification of the MLC, 2006, Cook Islands became the 96th Member State of the ILO to have ratified the Convention. This ratification is therefore an important step towards the universal application of the Convention.

The MLC, 2006 is the fourth pillar of the international regulatory regime for the maritime sector, alongside the three Conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), namely the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping (STCW), as revised in 1995, and again in Manila in 2010.

The MLC, 2006 will enter into force for Cook Islands on 18 December 2020, that one year after its ratification. For further information, please visit the MLC, 2006 webpage.
