Keynote speakers: David Autor (MIT), Elhanan Helpman (Harvard), and Margaret McMillan (Tufts U and IFPRI). Academic Organizers: Sascha O. Becker (U Warwick) and Marc Muendler (UC San Diego).

  2. United Nations Expert Group Meeting On the Challenge of Building Employment for a Sustainable Recovery Programme

    23 - 24 June 2011

    The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization, an Expert Group Meeting on “The Challenge of Building Employment for a Sustainable Recovery”. The meeting took place from the 23rd to the 24th of June, 2011 in Geneva and brought together specialists to undertake a review of responses to the global jobs crisis in different countries and regions of the world and concrete policies and strategies to create productive, decent employment during the recovery were considered.

  3. United Nations Expert Group Meeting On Poverty Eradication

    The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (IL0) organized a high-level Expert Group Meeting on “Poverty Eradication” from the 20th to 22nd of June 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the preparations for the 50th session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD), which is scheduled to take place in New York in February 2012.

    During this side-event to the LDC IV conference in Istanbul, ILO and other member agencies of the UN Cluster on Trade and Productive Capacity will present a joint concept note outlining their view on the importance of trade and productive capacity for LDCs. They will also sign a framework document for a new multi-agency trade support project for LDCs financed by Switzerland.

  1. Conference on 'Employment for Peace, Stability and Development' in the Horn of Africa

    The key objectives are to build consensus around the newly designed Regional Strategy for the Horn of Africa, foster commitment for the successful implementation of the ‘Road Map’ by stakeholders and promote the ‘Virtuous Triangle’ concept i.e. creating jobs, extending social protection and empowering people and communities to secure employment for peace, stability and development in the region.

    This year's theme is "Keeping the promise: Mainstreaming disability in the Millennium Development Goals towards 2015 and beyond". It aims to ensure that disability and the concerns of people with disabilities are included in the commitments to end global poverty made by the international community. The inclusion of persons with disabilities in all development activities is essential to realizing the MDGs and other development goals. This year’s Day will serve as a reminder to governments, global leaders, policy-makers and other stakeholders to keep up their efforts on behalf of disability-inclusive development.
