    The Employment Policy Department’s Knowledge-Sharing Conference was held on 21 November 2011 at ILO headquarters in Geneva. Its goal was to provide a forum for distinguished external experts to share their knowledge on the evolution of the global development agenda after the great recession of 2008-2009. By revisiting the framework of the Seoul Development Consensus, the conference sought to assess whether it should and could be implemented with greater vigour in the current economic context of the G20 countries. It was also a great opportunity to discuss how to build a new development framework by sharing different country case studies.

    The first training academy, organized by the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITC ILO), was held in October 2010 in Turin, Italy. Known as the "ILO Social and Solidarity Economy Academy (SSE Academy)", this inter-regional training opportunity has gather together more than 70 practitioners and policy-makers from around the world, to share their experiences and meet leading SSE specialists.

  5. Washington launch of the book "Making Globalization Socially Sustainable" at the Peterson Institute for International Economics

    In collaboration with the International Labor Office (ILO), the Peterson Institute held a conference on October 4, 2011, to present key findings from the new ILO-WTO co-publication Making Globalization Socially Sustainable. The edited volume includes nine chapters by leading experts who assess how trade and labor market policies can be accommodated to make globalization socially sustainable. The program began with an introduction by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Director of the Employment Sector of the ILO and former Minister of Trade of Costa Rica, and overview of the book presented by Marc Bacchetta (WTO) and Marion Jansen (ILO). This was followed by presentations of individual book chapters by their respective authors: John Haltiwanger, Margaret McMillan and William Milberg.

  6. Water in the Green Economy in Practice: Towards Rio+20

    3 - 5 October 2011

    The event placed a special focus in showcasing already successful projects of how water can be a major contributor to developing a green economy. At the end of the conference, UN-Water issued a draft best practice guide to actions, instruments and policies to progress towards a green economy for sustainable development and poverty eradication. The ILO participated and contributed to the conference.

  1. Pro-employment macroeconomic frameworks, sectoral strategies for employment creation and the informal economy - Employment Policy Department Knowledge-Sharing Workshop

    The Employment Policy Department’s 2011 annual retreat took place between the 20th and 23rd of September at the ILO premises in Geneva. Its goal was to share knowledge on progress made in five key work areas of the department: pro-employment macroeconomic frameworks, youth employment, sectoral strategies for employment creation, national employment policy formulation and research frontiers on the informal economy.

  2. Launch of the joint ILO-WTO publication: Making Globalization Socially Sustainable

    Globalization is widely seen as a powerful engine that has the potential to promote growth and development. For many years, however, concerns have also been raised about the effects of globalization on jobs and wages. This has led to questions about the social sustainability of globalization.With the aim of contributing to the elaboration of relevant policy proposals, The International Labour Office and the World Trade Organization are jointly undertaking a book project with the title “Making Globalization Socially Sustainable”.

  3. Skills for Trade and Economic Diversification in Macedonia: Enhancing local skills policies for the tourism and agro processing sectors Workshop.

    A workshop with representatives from relevant government and education institutions as well as employers' and workers' representatives from the respective sectors was organized in Skopje in September 2011 to discuss and validate initial findings of conducted analysises and promote skills dialogue among stakeholders.
